City United's AGM

City United held its Annual General Meeting at the Tamworth City Bowling Club last night. The meeting was a hugely successful one. The members attending gave their support and confidence in which our club is being administered and the direction in which the club is heading.

Our President had an overview of the 2012/13 season where he spoke of pride of the amazing achievements of our club. He pointed to the competiveness of its First Grade side and the club having three of its grades in the Grand Finals.
The large numbers at training throughout the season and the personal achievements of all the City players who made their mark on the representative stage last season.

At the meeting City was delighted to announce the Tamworth City Bowling Club would again be our Major sponsor and our home for the coming season.

  At the meeting the clubs executive for the 2013/14 season were elected.

The Tamworth City Bowling Club are having a sponsors night at the club for our prospective sponsors and current sponsors.

But we would also like to invite the Tamworth Kangaroos FC & City United Cricket Club as you are part of our club too.

·A general works itinerary is now underway for repair and maintenance of the club & we have repainted the inside of the club, most recently the restaurant area and it looks great.

·Upgrade to our security system & implementation of CCTV, all for the ongoing protection of our staff & patrons.

·Future plans include a deck out the front of the club between the greens with a BBQ area seating for alfresco dining. Also a smoking area at the back of the club off the gaming room
that would include an alfresco gaming area. Time line on this will hopefully be before summer 2013.

We have also upcoming events planned & they include:

·3 day Oktoberfest on the long weekend in October, this will be held on the third disused bottom green, we will have marquees, live music, a family day & lots of food & beer.
·Christmas in July 3 - course dinner
·Melbourne Cup Luncheon
·As well our continuation of the State of Origin $3 schooner & $1.50 hot dog nights for game 2 26^th June & game 3 17^th July
·Also there is a junior lawn bowls coaching day for 12-17 year olds on the 29th June to aid in the membership development

Results from Grand Final Matches

2^ndGrade – City United v Norths
City lost the toss and was sent out to bat first.
City was dismissed for a total of 95 runs in the 56^th over. Best batting: Pat Dwyer 26 runs; Jake Philp 19 runs.
In reply Norths were dismissed for a total of 156 runs in the 59^th over; taking a 61 run lead. Best bowling: Jake Philp 5/35 off 20 overs; Neil Cooke 2/29 off 9 overs.
City was required to bat a second time and was dismissed for a total of 100 runs in the 37^thover.
Best batting: Mark Fisher 30 runs; Michael Bellamy 17 runs.
Norths went out to bat a second time and achieved 2/40 off 14 overs to secure the win.
Best bowling: Jake Philp 1/11 off 5 overs; Sam Brown 1/10 off 4 overs.
City was looking in a good position at the end of day 1 with Norths 6/39 at stumps. However, a wet ball in hand early on day 2 saw the bowlers struggle to secure the last 4 wickets for a first innings lead.
Congratulations to Jake Philp on taking another 5 wicket haul.

3^rdGrade – City United v Old Boys

City lost the toss and was sent out to bat first.
City was dismissed for a total of 127 runs in the 51^st over. Best batting: Peter Mead 40 runs N/O; Josh Bennie 17 runs; Ben Ballantine 17 runs.
In reply Old Boys were dismissed for a total of 78 runs in the 57th over; a deficit of 49 runs. Best bowling: Terry Kampe 3/14 off 19 overs; Andy Jarrett 3/24 off 16 overs; Brett Walsh 2/7 off 8 overs.
City went out to bat a second time and were 9/245 off 74 overs when the match ended with a win to City United. Best batting: Terry Kampe 61 runs N/O; Peter Mead 53 runs.
Congratulations to captain, Peter Mead and his team who are now crowned winners of the 3^rdGrade Premiership for season 2012/13.
Congratulations also to Terry Kampe awarded “Man of the Match” with his 5 wicket haul and great performance with the bat.

4^thGrade – City United v Old Boys

City won the toss and elected to bat first. City was dismissed for a total of 139 runs in the 87^th over.
Best batting: Mark Chew 35 runs; Gary Whale 34 runs. In reply Old Boys was dismissed for a total of 159 runs in the 56 overs; taking a 20 run lead.
Best bowling: Eddie Beattie 5/39 off 14 overs; Paul Hagley 3/19 off 11.3 overs.
City went out to bat a second time and declared their innings closed at 3/102 off 27 overs. Best batting: Anthony Fitzgerald 41 runs; Eddie Beattie 37 runs N/O.
Old Boys were required to bat a second time and achieved 2/54 off 17 overs to secure them a win.

First-time captain, Anthony Fitzgerald and his team played in a great game of cricket between the two sides but unfortunately were unable to pull off a win.

City lost the toss and was sent in to the bat first.
City was dismissed for a total of 174 runs in the 71st over.
Best batting: Michael Bellamy 57 runs; Pat Dwyer 36 runs; Paul Fisher 22 runs.
In reply Souths were dismissed for a total of 105 runs in the 44th over, giving City a lead of 69 runs on the 1^st innings.
Best bowling: Jake Philp 5/25 off 17 overs; Simon Bellamy 3/36 off 11.1 overs.
City went in to bat for a second innings and at the close of the match was 7/197 off 81 overs.

A 5 wicket haul for Jake Philp was a great present to celebrate his 22^nd birthday.

City went out to bat for a second time and declared their innings closed at 6/217 off 36 overs.
Best batting: Scott Hurn 81 runs; Andy Jarrett 36 runs; Mat Ballantine 23 runs; Brett Walsh 22 runs.
In reply Souths were dismissed for 55 runs in the 35^th over handing City an outright victory.
Best bowling: Lachie Cooke 3/2 off 4.5 overs; Glenn Ryan 3/12 off 7 overs; Brett Walsh 2/12 off 9 overs.
It was a fantastic effort by the whole of the 3^rd Grade side to pull off a miraculous victory after being behind on the 1^st innings.
City will now take on Old Boys in the Grand Final.

City reached a total of 8/255 off their allotted 90 overs.

In reply Bective were dismissed for a total of 149 runs in the 81^st over.
Best bowling: Terry Skewes 3/27 off 18 overs; Nick Stacey 2/25 off 13 overs; Tom Fitzgerald 2/18 off 11 overs.
City will now take on Old Boys in the Grand Final.
The batting of Tom Fitzgerald was something to watch. The Father (Anthony) and Son (Tom) partnership set us up for a big score. Then at the end of the innings Ron hit what was the winning runs. Everyone did their job with the bat which allowed City to bat the entire 90 overs.
The bowling was tight from all bowlers Paul Lawrence was as tight as a fish's .................... well you know what I mean.

From adversity comes greatness

The cry of City,City, City!!! was heard loud and strong.

"The greatest victory's and the most magical moments comes when you're been truly tested, when you have taken some knocks and some disappointments. Because only if you've been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain."

City United will be represented in three grades. The "Let’s take a walk on the wild side" 2nd Grade side, the "Everything we do is magic" 3rd Grade side and not to forget the "BOOM BOOM!! It's gettin hot in here" 4th Grade side will all be there on Grand Final day.
Congratulations to our three Captains and all City players, supporters and their families for this wonderful achievement. To my knowledge this is the first time in City's history to have three teams represented in the Grand Final. All three team played excellent, smart, hard cricket against strong opposition and all deserve their opportunity in the big one.

More details of the matches tomorrow but lets celebrate and take time to reflect on the matches and this achievement until Wednesday, when it is back to training and preparing for the big weekend ahead.

Only in 4th Grade.

Garry Whale addresses the batsmen. "Now come on, lets just bat out our over".

And after we did bat out our overs with over 250 on the board Anthony Fitzgerald addresses the team "Let bowl line and length and back each other up in the field".

In 4th Grade there is no one leader, their is a number of senior players that guild the side around, you could say they all hunt as a pack.

Paulie Lawrence then calls the boys in for the final word of encouragement. Now you will never find Paul's team addresses in any coaching manuals. "We batted like crap so let's get out there and get those Bective sook's out".

Against Bective in the last Round game of the season was no different.





And as usual Paulie words inspired us to beat Bective out-right and go on to win the Minor Premiership.

The One-Day Final for 3rd Grade is set down for Riverside 3 starting at 10am. It's a 50 over match. Could all players please be at the ground by 9.30 am.

In the words of our President "They did us proud".

Peter Mead and his boys are the 2012/13 One -Day Premiers after victory in today's Final.

This makes it back to back One-Day Premierships for "The Mighty 3rd Graders".

The day started well with Peter winning the toss and sending Bective into bat. Bective lost two early wickets to run-outs, with one dismissal being a direct hit by Scotty Hurn.City bowlers used the conditions to the fullest. Fantastic fielding and catching resulted in regular wickets falling.Peter only needed to use three bowlers in Andy Jarrett, Glen Ryan and Terry Kampe, all three bowlers bowled beautiful line and length. Bective were dismiss for a small total of 30 runs.

Our two Ballentine's in Ben and Matt got us off to a confident start in the run chase. After the dismissal of Ben, Brett Walsh came to the crease and quickly ran down the very small total.

This victory was well deserved as this City side had only lost one of their ten one-day matches through the season.

The 2012/13 One -Day Premiership team is.

Victory song for City

As Peter Mead and his boys were walking off the field after winning the 2012/13 One –Day Final. Josh Bennie asked if City had a victory song. Well not yet, may be we could take the lead from the Australian Test team.

The song "Under the Southern Cross'' is sung by the players of the Australian cricket team after each victory.

"Under the Southern Cross I stand

A sprig of wattle in my hand

A native of my native land

Australia, you little beauty"

It is treated with reverence and respect by the players. At any one time there is a custodian of the song, whose honoured role it is to sing it and lead the others in singing it after a victory. As the keeper of the unofficial anthem retires, he anoints another to be the custodian.

The custodians so far have been:

Rod Marsh, passed it to Allan Border on retirement;

Border passed to David Boon when he took on the captaincy.

Boon passed the honour to Ian Healy when he retired.

Healy anointed Ricky Ponting when Healy retired.

Ponting gave the responsibility to Justin Langer when he became captain in 2004.

Langer appointed Michael Hussey in 2007 on his retirement.

Hussey has now passed it on to Nathan Lyon upon his retirement in January 2013.

A number of City players are either now living in Newcastle or are headed down that way shortly to further their education. Jack McVey, Ben Chew,

Michael Bellamy, Timothy Skewes to name a few. They will be travelling back when they can to play for City throughout the rest of the season.

From Tezza Kampe “When I signed up, I signed up to play for City United not a particular Grade”. Referring to Tezza playing three different Grades in as many weeks.

From David Smith when asked how he batted when playing 3^rdGrade on Saturday “I just kept swinging hard”.

 

I am sure all our School teachers we have within our club would be able to relate to this little story.

 

The teacher had asked the class to write an essay on a cricket match. With only a few minutes left, one boy had written nothing. Suddenly, he looked up at the clock, grabbed his pen and scribbled something on the paper. The teacher read out his essay: 'No play today. Due to rain".

There is only one "Sugar" and we just love him being around.

On Saturday our regular captain Peter Mead was away so Johnny "Sugar" was appointed captain for the day for 3rd Grade, the team at that stage had been unbeaten in all nine of their One-day matches. Johnny was very excited to win the toss on the second attempt (but that's another story). He elected to bat first and quickly ran off and started to pad up to open the batting until the boys told him to settle down and suggested that he could bat at four.

At the 35th over mark City had only 145 runs on the board and still with 5 overs available to bat, (SEE PICTURE) you see Sugar here discussing with Tezza Kampe whether he should declare the innings. Tezza was quick to point out to Sugar that it was not one of his best ideas.

The Don and Lillee

Don Bradman's last ever Test innings ends with a duck, bowled second ball by Eric Hollies at the Oval.

Bradman famously needed only four runs in his last innings to finish his career with a Test average in excess of 100 runs. While he failed in that respect, during his career he still amassed 5,028 runs against England in Ashes Tests, including 19 centuries and finished with a Test batting average of 99.94.

Indeed, Bradman’s aura as a sporting icon became so great that respected cricket writer R.C Robertson-Glasgow wrote: “There are no funny stories about the Don. No one ever laughed about Bradman. He was no laughing matter’‘.

One of the strongest Test sides ever seen, Australia's 'Invincibles' regained the Ashes with a thumping 4-0 win. Despite their dominance, the series is best remembered for Don Bradman's final Test innings, a second-ball duck at the Oval.

Dennis Lillee was the most accomplished and consistently hostile fast bowler of his time. At his peak no one was faster.

By his career's conclusion Dennis had claimed a world record 355 Test wickets and had become an Australian sporting legend. There is strong support among senior cricket officials, players and the media for the contention that he was the greatest Australian pace bowler of any era.

Caught Marsh bowled Lillee

Throughout his Australian career Lillee was also famous for his partnership with wicketkeeper Rod Marsh, and the scorecard entry 'c Marsh b Lillee' appeared 95 times in Tests, a partnership record between wicketkeeper and bowler that is yet to be broken. Coincidentally, both players ended their careers with 355 Test dismissals; Marsh took 343 catches and had 12 stumpings

I was out watching the rodeo last night, when I overheard these two want to be bull riders talking."That new bull nearly did me in, tonight."

"Oh yeah, what happened?" asked the other want to be bull rider.

"I entered the holding yard, then the bull came charging at me like a locomotive from hell. He damn near got me!" he replied.

"So, how'd you get away?" asked the other want to be bull rider.

"The bull kept slipping. He slipped three times, and that gave me a chance to make it to the fence and jump over," he said.

"Mate, that's scary! If it'd been me, I would probably have crapped all over the place," remarked the second want to be bull rider.

He then replied, "I DID! What do you think that bull was slipping in?"

Over the next ten days of the Country Music Festival, City United will be cooking a BBQ breakfast for the country music fans up at the Tamworth City Bowling Club from 7am till 10am. So if you are in the area call in and say "G'day". The Tamworth City Bowling Club has been a very good supporter of City United and we believe it's the best little club in town. Friday night raffles and trivia on Friday nights from 6pm are very popular so call in sometime through the week, as you will be warmly welcome.

This weekends Matches are all twenty/20. A game for the young, a game for the fast, a game for the fit. So when our President asked if he had been selected for any of the teams this weekend, this is what was said :

This Sunday will see our seniors on the Representative stage.

The past few weeks have seen our juniors performing in their Representative cricket .

Come Sunday our seniors will be representing both Tamworth and themselves.

Jack Mcvey has been selected for the Tamworth team to play Narrabri at Collins Park Narrabri in the War Veterans Cup match.

While in the Connolly Cup, City has Richard O’Halloran, Ben Semmier and Simon Toyer representing their town and themselves against Dumaresq Colts in Armidale.

The Victory's that evaded us

The big boys tried hard but the middle overs of their bowling allowed Wests to compile a few too many runs. In the end that was the difference. Again like so many matches Dan lead from the front and we were in the match right up to the death. Still allot of cricket yet to be played and matches to be decided.

Our 2nd Grade match mirrored 1st Grade, again just chasing a few too many runs.

Our 3rd Grade had a victory and collected the maximum two bonus points from the match. A moment out from that match was when Peter Mead took this screamer of a catch at short mid wicket. With his right hand still stinging and the imprint of the ball in bedded into his right hand, his fellow players came running in to congratulate him. Peter still in pain lightly shock his fellow player's hands with a very light return shake. UNTIL Sugar arrived to the gathering, Peter's hand was now starting to swell with pain, Peter presented his hand to Sugar who come down with all his force and gave Peter a congratulating hand slap. Peter yell of pain was heard around the fields.

Whale watching at 1st Grade on Saturday, could only happen at CITY

There was something very special happening on Saturday at 1st Grade. Whale watching of a difference, there was a pod of whales in 1st Grade. Yes there was Gary, Daniel and Nathan Whale all in the 1st grade side. All three taking to the field possibly for the final time in a Grade match. Dan had some fun with his old man by sending him from fine leg to fine leg in the first few overs before he thought his old man might have a heart attack. The crowd went off when Gary and Dan put on 31 runs for the eighth wicket. Family moments like these are treasured and I was pleased that I was there to witness it. Some matches throughout the season are more important than others. This weekend will give our 1st Grade an opportunity to break through into the top four of the competition. With Wests only 4 points ahead of us in fourth place, a victory this weekend would see us, up there with the leaders.
I know the boys will lift and meet the challenge head on. They held an extra fielding session through the week, to prepare for it. Let's do it.

Weather forecast for Saturday is for a warm 41 Degrees. At Training on Wednesday afternoon it was just so hot and dry that I heard the trees whistling for the dogs and when I arrived home I collected the eggs from my chooks from the backyard to find that they are laying their eggs sunny side up.

Do the right things gentlemen, drink plenty of water through Saturday morning and throughout the day. Each grade will have an additional fieldsman at each match. With additional drink breaks given.

I went to buy a Northern Daily Leader at my local newsagents this morning, "Sorry mate they are all sold out, they have been running out the door since 6 am" I was told.

"What is the big story of the day " I asked.
"Back page mate, Lachie Cooke took 5 for 11 for his Tamworth side in the Walter Taylor Shield played in Armidale"
You could not wipe that smile from my face as I left my newsagents empty handed.

Lachie Cooke is having a stellar year. He is the leading wicket taker for City in Third Grade with 16 wickets to his name ( I would of had more if the boys could catch, he quickly told me), which is a fabulous achievement when you take into account the strong bowling attack they have down there.
There is someone who can take alot of credit for Lachie's development this season. His captain Peter Mead, who keeps throwing him the ball, saying "you can do this."

I spent the last few days “on the wallaby track.” out Manilla way. On the 19th January our 1st and 2nd Grade sides will be playing Souths out at Manilla on their Turf wickets as with Country Music visitors and grounds being unavailable it was the only option. Our 3rd Grade side will still play their match in Tamworth as normal. More details on these matches will be posted when they come to hand.

What it means by "I play for City" was in evidence in this weekend matches. Against Bective we had wins in Seconds and Thirds. Half the 3 rd Grade side was made up of regular 4th Graders, 2nd Grade had it ranks made up of regular 3rd Graders. The players who were required to play up a Grade played their role in these victories.

First Grade just fell short in their run chase, the match was there to be won. The middle/lower batting order just fell away. First Grade have the players to go all the way this season but need to show a little more resolve and grit to do the hard work required to get the team home.

With the Christmas Break behind us, the season like the weather is warming up. It's time to hit the training nets harder then ever. The matches will become more intense, more important, it's time to lift even higher City.
