Let's revisit November '12

A day of weaken teams but also of personal achievements.

All grades were affected by some very late pull-outs resulting in all teams being unsettled but the Mighty Thirds showed the way.
Third grade had an afternoon to remember, scoring 302 off their 40 overs, with Peter (I just keep getting better) Mead scoring 144 before retiring. Cory, Johnny and Andy chipped in with some nice runs as well. To finish the day Lachie Cooke took another three wickets to add to seven wickets taken the week before.
In 1^st Grade Chris Langston showed some good form with the bat to score a half century. In 2^nd Grade (which was the Grade most affected by late pull-outs) Garry Whale showed that he puts a very high value on his wicket with a nice complied 22 runs. In 4^th Grade, their captain Timothy Skewes scored his second half century on the trot. Timothy opened the Innes but was left stranded by his fellow batsmen.

Our little 4^th Grades sure do bowl them down fast. Last Saturday City bowlers broke two separate bails in the afternoon in the process of bowling batsmen out. Lucky our President came to the rescue with some chewy gun that he was chewing at the time. "Here" he said “use this” the broken bails went back together nicely.

The weather forecast is for a HOT 40 degrees on Saturday. All players are reminded of using sun screen, drinking plenty of water prior to the match & during the match and wearing a broad brim hat. City’s captains will request from the umpires that extra drink breaks are taken.

Just ran out of time.

City’s 4^thGrade side “The Little Boys” and the brave Australian team have one thing in common, both teams just ran out of time. Ultimately, the Aussies fell two wickets short of victory. While City's 4th Grade side after piling on over 300 runs the week before needed twenty wickets on Saturday to obtain an outright result.

City fell two wickets short of that total. City's 4th Grade captain said "As a team we put in all day. In the last hour we had to obtain the last couple of wickets needed for the out-right win, I felt like we tried everything in our power -- round the wicket, over the wicket, short balls, pitched-up, spin, fielders all around the bat, even had a leg slip in place -- I thought we had a red-hot crack," Timothy said.

Before I go I must give credit to a young player who came to City this season to further his cricket. Daniel Rogers has worked so hard on his keeping and his game this season. He had an accident at work resulting in him breaking his collar bone through that time his still came down to support 2^ndGrade and it was wonderful to see him back on the field last weekend.

Jack McVey followed up his pleasing bowling performance from his last match to secure another three wicket haul on Saturday. His impressing figures read 3 for 23 off 12 overs. Dan the "Big Boys" captain was quoted in today's paper "We bowled in partnerships and built up pressure from both ends." and that's how you dismiss a strong batting line up for 170.

Talking of selections

At City's selection meeting last night Paul Fisher was writing down his preferred team list when one of our selectors noticed this new players name. 'Who's Bill Robinson?' asked Leigh Dwyer

Paul jumped in with excitement 'He won us the match last week.'
'Really? Is he a batsman or a bowler?' asked Leigh

'Neither. He's the umpire.' Paul replied with a grin

Aussie bowlers in Peter Siddle and James Pattinson went close to crossing the line with fiery confrontations with some of the South African batsmen in yesterday’s test match. Sledging is part of professional cricket.
At City United we believe there is no place for sledging in our local club cricket. We see it as a form of bullying. Sledging kills the fun of cricket!
Sledging most threatens the very players that we believe cricket should support. If juniors see or are ridiculed or threatened while they are playing, they will not enjoy themselves and will not want to keep playing. This is not in the interests of the game or the individual.
The Spirit of Cricket, in the MCC Laws of Cricket, stipulates that teams shall not “direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire.”
Sledging is against the Spirit of Cricket. We want our players to learn to be good sports – an important life skill on and off the field. Part of good sportsmanship is learning to lose with grace and win with humility. Sledging has no part in good sportsmanship.
We can’t control the behaviour of other teams. We can only ensure a fair and respectful standard in our own game which we hope will returned in kind by our opponents.
If an opposition team engages in sledging, it may be appropriate for our team captain to raise his concerns with the umpire.

The big boys dominating the second day of their match, Seconds & Thirds both winning by outright and the little fourth graders missing out on an outright win by one wicket (if only the President bowled a little bit better).

An amazing achievement

Anthony Fitzgerald has achieved what crickets could only dream of; he has scored his second century in as many matches. On Saturday against South’s he scored another century, this follows up his 138 runs against Wests the match before. What makes it even more special is that he retired on both occasions to end his innings. As one of his team mates said with a laugh “we are sick of clapping him”. What a wonderful achievement Anthony.

Back to school for the younger ones.

On Saturday we had Souths nine down for not that many, out came their number 11 batsman with pads on the wrong legs without a hat looking as if he knew he wouldn't be here for long. I said to our young keeper " here comes a "Bunny", he started to looked all around the place. I asked him "What are you looking". He replied "Looking for that rabbit were talking about".

For all you juniors coming through City- While most lower order batsmen would be expected to occasionally score some useful runs, a bunny is someone dismissed cheaply everytime.
Now a ferret, refers to a batsman even worse than a bunny (as in the wild, "a ferret goes in after a bunny.")

Jack McVey has been a major part of 2nd Grade bowling attack over a number of years now for City during that time he has been recognized and been awarded with major personal trophies along the way. He turns up each week with not much fuss but still puts in for his team.

On Saturday at Riverside 1 in First Grade he was rewarded for his dedication when he was able to show his skill with the ball in hand with the impressing figures of 3/22 off 13 overs; His captain Dan Whale talked up the bowling effort showed by this young man, who is new to First Grade. The jump of standard of cricket from Seconds to First Grade can catch allot of young players out. Jack has worked hard for these figures and deserves the praise from his captain and fellow club mates. Jack's biggest fan and supporter is his mum who sits quietly out the back encouraging her boy.

Our own Scott de WEymarn received the 3 First Grade Best& Fairest points after his match winning 70 runs from 257 balls. He showed grit and concentration in his 80 overs spent at the crease. GOOOOOOOO there is no better feeling when you achieve what you set out to do, CITY

 A chance less inning

 

Anthony Fitzgerald was 4 th Grade's man of match. Anthony’s 138 runs (retired) was the clubs first century for the season, it was instrumental in batting West's out of the match. A great achievement Anthony.

Where would we be without them.

They don't take to the field, they don't take that winning wicket or that winning catch, they don't score the winning runs. But both our Kathy and Nikki are one of the main reason City is so successful.

Our current 1st Grade captain Dan Whale train as if he were playing a game, he comes to training prepared, he is enthusiastic about all aspects of training and the training he does is quality training.

But it hurt !!

On Saturday I was given out L.B.W. which reminded me of a dismissal of Johnny Miskle a few years ago.
Johnny received a fast ball which struck him in front. Though it was obviously L.B.W. he tried to feign an injury by dancing around in agony. He fell to the ground clutching his foot and the umpire came up and looked down at him.
'Can you walk?' he asked, solicitously.
Still lying on the ground holding his foot Johnny look up to the umpire, hesitated and then replied 'Yes.'
'Then walk back to the pavilion, mate. You're out!'

Fielding training session

 

Our first fortnightly Tuesday fielding training session at No 1 Oval was a huge success (see pictures) with a good number of players attending. Our normal training session continues this afternoon at 5pm at the Riverside 2 practice cricket nets, all player are requested to attend. Training will be held every Wednesday throughout the season from 5pm. Teams will be selected after training and will be placed on the Web Site. It is the player’s responsibility to ensure they notify their captains of their unavailability after the teams have been selected.

Our 1^st grade scorer and manager Phillip Hood placed a challenge at the start of the season to the 1^st Grade team which was “Whenever the team scored over 200 runs in an innings he would shout them a carton of refreshments” Well bugger me, first match into the new season and his 1st Grade side scored 211 off their 35 overs and Phil will be required to pay up.

Our web site is celebrating 40 000 hits since it was launched on the 16th October 2009. We have had inquires and feed back from visitors from all over the world. Not bad for a small sporting body based in the bush. A big thank you must go to everyone involved from the early days with the likes of Dan Mitchell, Peter Langston and Cory Callott to the current Web custodians.

A reflexion on the season that was.

Back in September '12 we thought of our wives and girlfriends with the season fast approaching.

Sometimes she dosen't see the point of the game but you have to love them.

       With the cricket season only a few weeks away now, I remember taking my then girlfriend to her first match of cricket. She sat through the first innings although she was plainly bored, she was then so relieved to see us leaving the field as we lost our last wicket.

      To her shock to see after a short break, the other team going out to bat. When an opposition batsman gave a tremendous swipe and knocked the ball out of the ground, she was very quick to her feet 'Thank goodness they got rid of it,' she yelled. 'Now we can all go home”.
