A early call.

City’s United 3^rd Grade side in sitting in fourth place on the ladder and still has an 8 point lead over there nearest rivals. After two disappointing batting performances against South and the first innings against Wests the young 3^rd Grade team will take some confidence from the second batting innings last week.  The team finished 2 down for 142 in a run chase for an outright win. Anthony Fitzgerald scored 63 runs, Liam Dunn 34 runs and the captain Tim Paynter being 24 not out.

I am calling this one early but I believe our Mighty 4^th Grade side has the Minor Premiership tied up being 16.5 points ahead of Norths. Robby Greg’s team had an outright victory against West last weekend and are looking forward to what could be a rehearsal for the Major Semi-final to be played in a few weeks. This team has been so consistent in their performances throughout the season. The sons are coming of age as cricketers and the fathers are trying to hold their bodies together (well only just) for the remaining few matches.

City’s Second Grade side also had an Out-Right win on Saturday. City battered first the first week and scored 144 runs Pat Dwyer score a nice half century finishing with 52 runs with Tom Fitzgerald scoring 31 runs.

The second day of the match was all about two wonderful bowlers for the club in Jake Philp and Glen Ryan. Jake pace and accuracy was scary at times and up the other end Glen was always on the money. In Wests first Innings of 44runs saw Glen pick up a five wicket haul.

The second innings of Wests (55 Runs) mirrored the first with both Jake and Glen again ripping through the Wests batting line up.

This win follows a strong win again Souths the match before and put Second Grade in striking distance of a semi-final berth if good enough next match.

It was so great to see the three old timers in Terry Skewes and David Smith both talking a catch as well as Rodney Pryor getting a run-out for the team.

While manning the boom gate at the Country Music Festival Mark and his team dreamt of the possibility of making the semi-finals.

Throughout every season there is always highs and lows, this my friends is a something our 1st Grade squad can be so proud of.  After Saturdays out-right win against Wests our courageous 1^st Grade side is sitting in 4^th spot on the ladder with one match to be played before the semi-finals.

It was only two weeks ago at Dick Edwards Oval, our 1^st Graders totally out played Souths in a One-Dayer to earn a spectacular win.

 On Saturday on the final day of a two day match City were looking for big points against Wests. Following a 71 from wicketkeeper Dan Whale, City became the only side to post more than 200 runs on the notorious Dick Edwards Oval wicket last week scoring 203 runs to set up their first outright of the season.

Ben Semmler tore through Wests top order twice to pick up 10 wickets for the match that included a hat-trick.
The day unfolded with Wests resumed at 2-24 but Semmler made short work of them with the help of a slightly damp pitch that was “popping”. The opening bowler took the first five wickets in the first innings before snaring a hat-trick to take the final three as Wests crumbled to be all out for 65.
Adam Cruickshank was the final wicket in Ben Semmler’s hat-trick with Mackenzie Morrison taking a screamer at short cover.

 Wests batsman Cruickshank then had the unenviable duty of facing the next ball as well, as Wests were sent back in and then had the unenviable long walk back to the pavilion as he copped another duck – this time run out after slipping over on the damp surface.

Tait Jordan took 3-19 from his nine overs, but the day belonged to Semmler who bowled City back into finals contention. Wests fell for 117, 21 runs short of sending City back to the crease.

The boys still have some work to do, not quite one point ahead of Souths. City’s captain Simon Toyer praised the efforts of Semmler as well as Whale for setting the win up.

“The last few years we have played dead rubbers at this time of year,” Toyer said.
“It is just great to be playing for something in the final game.”

Phillip Hood is now out of hospital after his successful knee replacement operation. Phil is at home watching the cricket world cup on Television. He is hoping to able to come down and watch some City matches this Saturday.

Phil does need a loan of a excises bike as part of his rehabilitation. If you could help him out please see him on Saturday. I can just see Phil now peddling hard dreaming he is leading the Le Tour de France.

It just isn’t cricket.

In shocking news a former City United player Peter Lalor was involved in a disgusting incident on Saturday in Newcastle.
Peter was a junior at City, while moving through the grades he was part of a 2^nd Grade premiership win for City. Peter was playing 1^st grade when he moved to Newcastle. His Father Steve Lalor also played for City and recently has become a district umpire.

Peter now plays in Newcastle for the Jewells Tavern Beavers and was bowling against a Merewether at Jesmond's Heaton Park when he was struck over the head with a bat by a rival player on Saturday.

Captain Peter Lalor counts himself lucky to be alive after the incident left him with nine stitches and a concussion

"It was a shock to everyone," Lalor said. "It must have been a brain snap."
The game was abandoned and Lalor was taken by ambulance to hospital bleeding from his head.
CT scans later cleared him of serious damage and the 33-year-old is expected to be released from hospital on Monday.
Police are investigating the incident.
Peter has been with the Jewells Tavern club for the past eight seasons but has played first-grade district cricket for Waratah-Mayfield.  
All at City wishes Peter a speedy recover.

I spoke to Phillip Hood through the week after having a knee replacement on Monday morning. He was feeling a bit down until I told him although City won three of the four matches on Saturday no-one or no team was able to meet the challenge that he laid down for the Saturday’s matches. That brought a smile to his face.

Our 2nd Grade side has had a very tough season. With a early win at the start of the season against Wests our 2nd Grade side captained by Mark "Pup" Fisher was leading the competition. Since that match the team has struggled to find a win, although on many occasions the boys were not far away.
Injuries, players being unavailable, the inclusion of Terry Skewes and David Smith who the team had to hind in the field didn't assist in the teams results.
But this team has built a great bond and are a very tight knit group of players who always support each other no matter the situation of the match.

Mark and Johnny will be planning the down fall of Wests this weekend. 

Without a doubt, Mark Fisher is the reason the team has such a strong team spirit. Mark has this positive, upbeat, undying enthusiasm and self belief for his team and players, he has held this team together.
On Saturday Mark's team played Souths and all his dreams came true with our 2nd grade team playing the match of their lives. After the win Mark and his players were understandably elated. Most of the team spent a number of hours celebrating at our major sponsor, the Tamworth Golf club.

This was the heading in Mondays Northern Daily Leader, after our 1st Grade side rolled Souths for just 71 runs at Riverside 1 to complete a convincing win.
Our 1st Grade side lead by Simon Toyer battered first, after losing two early wickets Richie (I always think he looks good) O'Halloran 22 runs and Benny Semmler 24 runs steadied the ship and set a nice platform. Both batsmen gave the team a launching pad being only two down at the twenty over drink break. And Launch we did smacking 102 from the remaining twenty overs.

Tezza (I look just as good as Richie) Kampe 31runs had a ball, hitting the experienced bowling attack of Souths all over the park. His face lit up when ever he told the story of the massive six that he hit.
City finished with a match winning 154 runs.
The bowlers were not going to let Souths off the hook with all five bowlers Jack McVey, Tait Jordan, Simon Toyer, Dan Lawrence and Man of the Match Ben Semmler all taking wickets.
 The reason for the papers headline is Jack McVey is headed back to University in Newcastle. It was a perfect way for his team mates to give Jack a departing gift.
